Vernon Search and Rescue is in disbelief following the death of one of their long-time members on Friday.
According to a statement from the group, Jon Ottesen, a member with over 45 years of service to the team, community and those in need, passed away. The team called Ottensen a father, friend, mentor and great leader who steered the course of VSAR for many years.
"It is with deep sadness and heartache Vernon SAR mourns the loss of one of our members, Jon Ottesen," wrote VSAR. "His passing has suspended reality for all of us. It was way too soon, and words cannot describe how we feel at the loss of our friend."
During his time with the group, Ottesen was a SAR manager, team leader, and member of the swiftwater, boat, rope and ATV teams.
"He spent many years on the board of directors, in many different roles and impacted many lives. He was our go-to and a key part at the heart of VSAR. As a SAR Manager, he led his team with dedication. Compassionate and caring, he wanted the best for everyone and in turn, everyone wanted to be the best."
"He was a task maker. In his quiet, kind, and thoughtful way, he never complained but set an example. As a team, we received many lessons on how to do things right. Jon knew how to detail a SAR Truck. Our vehicles never shone as much as when Jon was in charge and to this day, we strive to make them sparkle and often say 'what would Jon think of that.' He liked lights, man did he like those lights."
The team went on to call Ottesen "an extraordinary man" who loved his family.
"His loss was sudden, and the grief is heavy. Our team shares in his family’s sorrow – and in their pride and it is with respect and gratitude that we knew him."
"Rest easy Jon."
