UPDATE: Bunting Road Fire grows to 3,000 hectares

(UPDATE: July 21 @ 10:45 am) – The Bunting Road wildfire (K41561) is now burning at an estimated 3,000 hectares.

The evacuation order for 18 parcels and approximately 66 properties on the east side of Mabel Lake remains in place.

The BC Wildfire Service is reporting that this fire is still burning out of control.

On July 19, crews were able to make some progress to hold control lines while constructing guards on the north and south ends of the fire.

There are six firefighters and one helicopter fighting this blaze and they are supported by industry with control lines.

(UPDATE: July 20 @ 11:30 am) – The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has issued an evacuation order for the 10,000-17,000 block of Mabel Lake Forest Service Road (FSR), including properties known as Cottonwoods.

The BC Wildfire Service updated this fire at 9:30 this morning and notes that, "this wildfire is currently classified as out of control. There was no change in size on the fire yesterday."

However, the fire is considered a risk to properties on the east side of Mabel Lake.

Residents in the area must leave immediately and will not have access to their houses while the order is in place.

RDNO says residents should follow these instructions to exit the area:

  1. Travel south on Mabel Lake Forest Service Road, aka Lumby Mabel Lake Road to the Village of Lumby (approximately 50 km).
  2. Turn west towards Vernon on Highway 6 to Coldstream (Vernon) (approx. 20 km)

Evacuees are asked to register at the RDNO’s Office at 9848 Aberdeen Rd, Coldstream, BC V1B 2K9. Evacuees can also register online at

  • Shut off all gas and electrical appliances, other than refrigerators and freezers.
  • Close all windows and doors, latch all gates gates but do not lock
  • Gather your family and, if you have room, take a neighbour or someone needing transportation. Do not use more vehicles than you have to.
  • Take critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, and keys) only if they are immediately available. Take pets in pet kennels or on leash.
  • Do not use the telephone unless you need emergency service.

(UPDATE: July 19 @ 11:00 am) – The Bunting Road wildfire has grown to 600 hectares, however, the fire saw no growth between July 18 and July 19.

The cause of this fire remains to be under investigation and is still classified as out of control and a potential risk to structures.

There are now seven firefighters on scene and they are being supported by industry workers who are building a fire guard.

The evacuation alert for 10,000-17,000 block of Mabel Lake Forest Service Road (FSR), including properties known as Cottonwoods, remains in place.

Crews will also be working today to ensure control lines are held.

"Crews were able to make good progress on the fire yesterday, constructing guard on the north and south ends of the west flank, widening existing road ways and working on small hot spots in a plantation east of the fire," explains the BCWS website.

(Original Story: July 16 @ 5:20 pm) – The Bunting Road wildfire was discovered last week on July 7, but has only just been added to wildfires of note as it poses a potential danger to life and health.

The wildfire is estimated to be around 277 hectares and is located just 41 km northeast of Lumby.

There is currently one helicopter and six firefighters on scene with the assistance of heavy equipment and industry personnel.

Based on the recommendation from the BC Wildfire Service, an Evacuation Alert has been issued by the Regional District North Okanagan (RDNO) at the Emergency Operations Centre due to the wildfire on the east side of Mabel Lake.

The properties affected are known as Cottonwoods, which is the 10,000 block -17,000 block of Mabel Lake Forest Service Rd aka Lumby Mabel lake Rd.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
