Police watchdog investigating after BC officers shoot woman while responding to home disturbance

The BC police watchdog has opened an investigation after a woman was shot during an encounter with officers on Vancouver Island.

It happened at about 5:12 pm on Saturday, May 8 in the Port Albion area, near Ucluelet.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating what happened alongside the Island District General Investigative Services.

The Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council has also been engaged, the IIO explained.

The IIO said Ucluelet RCMP was called to a report of a disturbance at a home, with a man needing medical assistance.

“Responding officers entered the home and encountered a woman with a weapon,” the watchdog added.

“Shots were fired by the police officers. The woman suffered gunshot wounds and was transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services.”

The man in need of medical treatment was taken to hospital as well, the IIO explained.

Nobody else was hurt.
