UPDATE: Wolf tranquilized in downtown Victoria begins new life after being relocated

(UPDATE: Jan. 28 @ 6 am): The wolf that was tranquilized and captured on Sunday after running around in downtown Victoria has been relocated.

Conservation officers said the bold canine, which is thought to have swum to the city from Discovery Island, was released to an undisclosed location on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

"The mature male wolf was assessed by the provincial wildlife veterinarian on Monday morning," they said.

They added: "Although Conservation Officers believe the wolf swam to the capital, it is not being released on Discovery Island as it left for a reason – the wolf was looking for food or resources, and for the safety of the public and the animal, it was relocated out of the urban environment.

"The Conservation Officer Service recognizes the public’s care and concern for the well-being of the wolf. A similar coastal habitat was carefully chosen, in consultation with biologists, to give the wolf the best chance possible."

The canine was spotted roaming around the James Bay area of the city on Saturday, having made its way from Discovery Island.

Conservation officers were initially hopeful that the wolf would swim back to its home but it stayed in the city instead.

It was ultimately found between a fence and a building in a residential area on Sunday.

After police and conservation officers created a safety cordon around the animal, it fell asleep.

It was then tranquilized and taken away unhurt.
