Across BC, there were 73 suspected illicit drug deaths in June, marking the lowest total since September 2016.

That number is also down 35% from June of 2018 and down 15% from May of this year.

However, even with a 30% decrease in the first six months of 2019 compared to 2018, there were still 538 suspected drug deaths reported.

According to BC Coroners Services, fentanyl is responsible for four out five suspected fatal overdoses in the province.

BC’s Interior Health region reported the lowest number of overdose deaths in the province while Vancouver, Surrey, Victoria and Abbotsford.
