Police watchdog investigating after death on Hwy 97A near Armstrong

The police watchdog is investigating after a man died and a woman was hurt along Hwy 97A.

On Sunday at about 3 am, a North Okanagan RCMP officer saw what was thought to be a stolen vehicle heading south on the highway near Armstrong.

“The frontline officer attempted to stop the vehicle which had come to a stop in a shallow ditch near McCallan Road and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the RCMP explained.

“A female passenger was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

The highway was closed in both directions, but has since reopened.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC will now investigate the incident to determine whether police action or inaction was linked to the man’s death.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
