UPDATE: Dragons invest in Kelowna high school students

(UPDATE: Nov. 8 @ 11:45 am) - Kelowna was represented on Dragons' Den last night and the Dragons liked what they saw.

Keneisha Charles, Aaliyah Charles, Ashley Ciardullo and Theresa Schwab made their pitch to the Dragons in May and the episode featuring them finally aired on Thursday.

The Rutland Senior Secondary students were seeking $30,000 for a 25% stake in Operation Take Two, a business centred around a new way to recycle plastic, and they succeeded.

They also received a matching $30,000 donation from GoodSpark Desjardins.

"Our plan for the investment is to get more equipment for our workspace and multiply our impacts by using our profits to help youth in other communities start their own Take Two workspaces," said Ciardullo, a grade 9 student.

"This project is something that will continue to engage generations of students here at RSS, who will continue to innovate with new products."

Operation Take Two started two years ago when a small group of RSS students transformed a Big Steel Box shipping container into a fully-functioning plastic recycling workspace.

(Original story: Nov. 7 @ noon) - If you tune into Dragons' Den on CBC tonight, you’ll see four local teenagers sharing a pitch with some of Canada’s richest people.

Rutland Senior Secondary students Keneisha Charles, Aaliyah Charles, Ashley Ciardullo and Theresa Schwab made their pitch to the Dragons back in May.

Tonight, their episode finally airs and we find out whether they were able to persuade one of the Dragons to make an investment in their business.

They were asking for $30,000 for a 25% stake in Operation Take Two, a business centred around a new way to recycle plastic.

"Operation Take Two is a youth-led social enterprise revolutionizing the global issue of waste by empowering communities to turn their trash into treasure,” the four students say about their business.

“Not only do we reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, we create a community hub for education and innovation and plan to multiply our impacts by using our profits to help youth in new communities start their own Take Two workspaces.”

We don’t yet know if they received an investment or not and it’s a secret they’ve had to keep under locks since May.

Tonight, the world finds out whether the Dragons were impressed with the pitch put forward by the four Kelowna girls.

Dragons' Den airs at 5 pm PT on CBC.
