Damage to a FortisBC gas line is causing some issues in downtown Kelowna today.
FortisBC, the RCMP and fire crews are currently onsite to help keep the area safe and Doyle Avenue is currently closed between St. Paul Street and Ellis Street.
“We expect to be working throughout the afternoon to safely excavate the damaged section of line and stop the leak,” explained a FortisBC statement to NowMedia.
The statement added that it remains likely crews will need to shut off a section of the system to complete repairs.
If that’s the case, the Madison Building, an apartment located on the northeast corner of Doyle and Ellis, will be without natural gas service for a period of time.
“Once we complete repairs and reactivate the impacted portion of the system, our crews will restore service by visiting each affected home or business to turn natural gas back on at the metre and relight all affected appliances,” the statement said.
According to FortisBC, the Interior Health building on the southeast corner of that same intersection remains accessible and there are no evacuations at this time.
NowMedia will update this story as more information becomes available.
