Crews battle explosions during grass fire near Okanagan Rail Trail

Kelowna Fire Department crews were called into action just before 10 a.m. on Friday morning

According to the KFD, dispatched received numerous 911 calls reporting a grass fire near the Rail Trail behind Enterprise Way.

Upon arrival, crews witnessed multiple explosions from compressed gas cylinders from a nearby homeless shelter area.

Smoke and flames were visible from the blaze that crews managed to contain to a 20’ x 30’ area.

Fire investigators and RCMP later determined that no one was at the homeless camp at the time of the fire.

Crews required two engines, one command vehicle and two bush trucks along with nine personnel to knock down the fire.
