Kamloops RCMP will be out in full force on Tuesday making sure all transit users able to wear face masks are complying with directions from the Provincial Health Officer.
According to BC Transit, police will be carrying out a joint, on-site awareness campaign all morning. Members will be handing out face coverings to transit customers at the Lansdowne and North Shore exchanges when necessary.
"The Kamloops RCMP are committed to working with our community partners to ensure the safety of all commuters utilizing the Kamloops Transit System," said Cpl. Dana Napier. "Everyone is aware of the current Public Health Order and the mandatory mask requirement while riding public transit. We all have a responsibility in protecting the health of one another during COVID19 and we will be working with our partners to ensure that this is being complied with."
They will also be reminding people that a fine of $230 can be handed out for not complying with the order.
For those who don't know, it is required to wear face coverings when onboard BC Transit vehicles, unless the customer is medically exempt. Anyone waiting at a bus stop must also wear a mask.
BC Transit Supervisors and managers now have the authority to enforce compliance with the assistance of police if necessary.
Some are unable to wear face coverings. BC Transit is asking customers to be kind to others, and if they are not wearing a face mask, it is customary to assume they meet exemption criteria.
