Kamloops RCMP is being investigated after a man was stabbed to death in the city on Saturday.
Paul Samuel Whitten, 39, died after police arrived at a home on Clarke Street following reports of a stabbing.
Jason Michael Holm, 37, was later arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Now the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating whether police could have found the man when they were called on July 31 by a relative who was concerned about his mental health.
Mounties visited Holm’s home on July 31 but said they could not find him, the IIO explained.
The next day, at 10:34 am, they were called about the stabbing at a neighbouring home.
Holm was later found and arrested in connection with the killing at 2 pm.
“The IIO is investigating the circumstances surrounding the police’s lack of success on July 31 in locating the man charged in the August 1 stabbing,” the IIO said.
Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
Kamloops RCMP, meanwhile, has issued an appeal for information about Holm’s movements on Saturday.
Anyone who saw him is asked to call the RCMP.
“He may have been walking in the downtown core anytime between 6:30 am and 12 pm,” S/Sgt. Simon Pillay said.
“If you saw Mr. Holm, had contact with him or know anything else about this investigation, please contribute to the safety of our community by contacting our investigators.”
