Another bleak weekend with 17 deaths and 1,933 new COVID-19 cases recorded

Health officials have announced 1,933 new cases of COVID-19 were identified over the weekend.

From Friday to Saturday 713 cases were reported, from Saturday to Sunday 626 new cases were recorded and between Sunday and Monday, another 594 cases were confirmed.

A grim all-time high was set over the weekend with 17 deaths, the most ever reported in a three-day span.

Dr. Bonnie Henry reported that the majority were seniors and elders in long term care homes.

The new cases are largely clustered in the Lower Mainland, with 1,304 recorded in the Fraser Valley, 414 in Vancouver Coastal, 104 in Interior Health, 61 in Island Health and 48 in Northern Health.

More people than ever before are in hospital with the virus, with 277 reported on Monday, up 96 patients from the week before.

Last week, Henry urged British Columbians to return to how they behaved during the first wave of the pandemic.

“We need to do more,” she said.

“We need to keep our essential activities open and operating safely, we need to keep our schools open and operating safely, and our workplaces that can be safely open, open. And we need to relieve the stress on our health-care system, right now.”

The new public health restrictions on non-essential travel, social gatherings and exercise classes will be imposed until at least Dec. 7.
