BC records over 900 new COVID-19 cases for the first time, hospitalizations at an all time high

BC set several new all time high marks for COVID-19 on Friday.

Health officials announced a record breaking 911 new cases, the first time more than 900 cases have been identified in a 24-hour period.

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 has topped 300 for the first time, climbing to 301.

Another 69 people were in critical or intensive care.

Dr. Bonnie Henry also confirmed 11 new deaths related to the virus, the majority of which were in long term care homes.

There are currently 10,430 people isolating due to possible exposure to the virus.

Once again, the majority of the cases were in the Fraser Health region (649) and Vancouver Coastal Health region (153).

Forty-seven cases were in the Interior Health region, 35 were in the Northern Health region and 27 were on Vancouver Island.

During her press conference, Dr. Henry said the recent surge in cases has made many venues no longer safe for gathering and the venues are not doing anything wrong.

"We are see a much higher level of community transmission," Henry explained.

"This means places that were safe to have events a few weeks ago ... are not safe today. These locations are not doing anything wrong. They had COVID safety plans in place."

Henry also announced a change in the way BC reports the positivity rate, removing the results from private tests such as in the film industry or other industry tests.

According to Henry, non-MSP tests are mainly asymptomatic which has had a considerable impact on the positivity rate.

Earlier Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said a “majority” of Canadians should be vaccinated against the virus by September.
