Police in the BC Interior used all their resources to save a suicidal woman last night.
According to S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, officers attended to an address on Burgess Road in the Deka Lake area after hearing about a woman threatening to harm herself and others with a knife. Prior to their arrival, all other family members in the home fled next door, leaving the affected person absolutely alone.
Officers entered the residence to ensure the woman's well-being. After a lengthy negotiation with the woman, who was still holding the knife, police successfully deployed a "conducted energy weapon."
After using the taser, the woman was apprehended under the Mental Health Act of BC. Paramedics then checked her for any signs of injuries, to which they found none.
The woman was transported to the 100 Mile House Hospital where she spoke to a physician who further evaluated her mental health. Thankfully, no one involved in the incident was killed or injured.
"These incidents are very high stress for all those involved, and everyone will be offered victim assistance as a result for additional support," said Nielsen. "The officers involved will be spoken too and protocol followed regarding debriefing as necessary."
