Monthly newsletters will keep you in the know

The Lakeshore Times is a monthly newsletter that welcomes new residents and lets you know what type of fun activities and treats are happening in the area.

The author goes out of her way to celebrate events, lets you know about cookouts, upcoming entertainment that hosts dancers and musicians, games and more.

The Lakeshore Times adds extra value to all. It unites residents and announces upcoming birthdays for residents and staff.

Themed events

There's Tropical Tuesdays and Sunday Funday along with special events like the fan-favourite, Hawaiian night.

Residents gather together, enjoy spaced out seating and the event is recapped in the following monthly newsletter with pictures of the themed event.

"While we sported our best Hawaiian shirts and muumuus, we sipped Hawaiian Punch and made our way to the Caribbean," said a resident of Lakeshore Place.

We were told that the Mojitos made by Lisa were cold and not too sweet, and residents played Caribbean trivia underneath the décor which was an excellent backdrop for the professional dancers from Dual Influence.

Gardening

This season was successful and the caretakers had so much bounty that they continued to harvest their rewards and share with the kitchen staff and residents.

The grounds and walking path at Lakeshore Place are well-maintained and if you choose to take a seat at one of the many benches, someone is sure to come by and say hello.

Social's

Friday Social's keep everyone smiling.

There is a great line up for each month, so residents at Lakeshore Place are encouraged to mark it on their calendars.

"We'll bring the food and wine, you bring the shine," joyously exclaimed a resident. "Ok, I know, that was cheesy."

Special projects

One of the recent additions to the project area was the Appreciation Station.

Although it's not something that is always available, this was a nice medium to express gratitude and acknowledge the efforts of residents and staff; all of which make your Lakeshore community a brighter place.

Outings

Bus trips gather the group to visit others, have a picnic or see the sights and sounds of the beautiful Okanagan.

Members can see the calendar for dates and keep an eye out for posters that tell you the upcoming trip destinations.

Resident spotlights

In the Lakeshore Times, a resident is given the spotlight to help you get to know them.

Maybe you'll see them at dinner or in the games room and this helps you strike up a friendly conversation.

In a recent addition, we learned that this resident was a former Calgary policeman for seven years before moving to Kelowna. For 23 years, this person worked for Canada post delivering mail throughout Kelowna as well as to the boxes along the rural routes in Glenmore, Mission and Rutland. The article went on to share their sense of humour and interests.

Recurring events

As part of a recent Sunday Funday, another Community Cruise took place with special help from the Okanagan Classic Thunder Bird Club.

The third Community Cruise for this summer took place in late August and since the first Community Cruise proved to be very popular with the Gated Communities the group visited and Lakeshore Place members, the group was ready to do another one.

In this instance, their event coordinators had an objective to fulfill three requests.

"One of our long-time members, Harry Ashbrook, who resides at the David Lloyd Seniors residence in Kelowna, was celebrating his 86th birthday. We also received a request from the Lakeshore Place Retirement residence to provide some cars for a static display, which we have done in previous years. Finally, we included another long-time member, Bill Wiswell, who resides at the Village at Smith Creek Residence, located in Westbank, as part of our Drive-By car show."

<who>Photo Credit: Unsplash</who>In cooperation with Garry and Lorraine Roth and Cheri Reeve, Harry Ashbrook’s daughter, they organized and coordinated the date and times the Rolling-Car-Show would appear at each of the senior’s residence.

"To start the Cruise, we used the Lakeshore Place Retirement residence as our initial Muster Point. With the cooperation of Lisa Hanssens, Activity Coordinator, Lakeshore Place Retirement residence, a parking area in front of the residence was made available for the cars to be parked in a manner that provided us with an easy entrance and departure. Over a period of approximately one hour, many of the residents were able to view the 10 cars that participated," said Dave O’Byrne, resident and newsletter contributor.
