Canada’s public safety minister has accused the United Kingdom of “off-loading their responsibilities” after revoking a British-Canadian ex-ISIS member’s citizenship.
Ralph Goodale’s office said “Canada is disappointed” that the UK took away Jack Letts’ British citizenship.
Letts, who is in a Kurdish jail, left his home in Oxfordshire in 2014 to join ISIS when he was 18.
He was captured by Kurdish forces in 2017 while trying to escape to Turkey.
The statement from Goodale’s office emphasises there is no legal obligation to enable the return of the likes of Letts – who the British media has dubbed “Jihadi Jack” – to Canada.
But it added that Canadians involved in terrorism must be held accountable for their crimes.
In an interview with British media, Letts said he was “definitely an enemy of Britain”.
