VIDEO: Helicopter footage shows destruction of lava flow from Hawaii volcano

Shocking video shared by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) shows the amazing flow of fast-moving lava from a volcano on Hawaii’s big island, which continues to cause problems.

The video was taken over Kilauea Volcano’s lower east rift zone on Saturday as lava advances towards the southeast. USGS says that lava fountaining is visible in the background.

Their Saturday update on the volcano says that eruption of lava and ground cracking in the area of Leilani Estates subdivision continues, and beginning on Friday and into Saturday the rate of lava eruption has increased.

“It is unknown whether the flows will continue to advance, or stop, and new lava flows are likely given the rate of activity seen at the rift zone,” says USGS.

On Saturday afternoon, officials said two flows from the merged fissure complex joined less than a mile from the coast and continue to flow southward between Pohoiki and Opihikao Rds.

"Additional explosive events that could produce minor amounts of ash fall downwind are possible at any time. Volcanic gas emissions at the summit remain high," said USGS.
