BC politician awarded for life-saving action

It was a flight that could have ended in tragedy had it not been for one B.C. politician.

Todd Doherty, Conservative MP for Cariboo-Prince George, was on a flight from Vancouver to Prince George when a man collapsed shortly after takeoff.

With the man lying lifeless on the floor, Doherty sprung into action and began giving the man chest compressions.

The quick thinking saved the man’s life, he slowly began regaining consciousness as the plane turned back towards Vancouver.

An already dramatic situation became more personal for the MP when he realized that he actually knew the man lying lifeless on the floor.

“I knew his family, I knew his wife. And that’s when you really kind of start thinking about things,” said Doherty in an interview on Thursday.

The MP’s lifesaving deed hasn’t gone unnoticed, Doherty was awarded the St. John Ambulance for his swift action on the flight.

“The greatest reward for me was that he was actually going to be OK and that he was going to be able to be with his family.”
