Investigation into youth grabbed near Vernon elementary school ongoing

North Okanagan RCMP continue to investigate a suspicious occurrence that took place near a Vernon Elementary School.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12th, the RCMP received a report of an unknown suspicious male who approached two 11-year-old girls while they were walking home from Mission Hill School in the 1500 block of 36th Sreet, just after 6 p.m.

Police have been told that a man grabbed the arm of one of the girls who were both walking on a path near the school. The youth quickly yelled for help, causing the man to let go and flee on foot.

The youths were able to grab the attention of a passing vehicle, at which time the vehicle occupants assisted the females in getting to safety by retreating into a nearby church.

The youths were not physically injured as a result of this incident.

“Officers are currently investigating this incident, however are looking to speak to the good Samaritans that assisted the youth last evening, as they left prior to police arrival and were not identified,” stated RCMP Cst. Kelly Brett.

The suspect in this incident is described as a male with tan coloured skin, wearing dark or all black clothing, approximately 5’7 – 5’10 with a thin to average build.

North Okanagan RCMP are asking anyone who may have been in the area of the 1500 block of 36th St, on Tuesday February 12th between 5:30 and 6:30 pm to please contact the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and reference file #2019-3092.
