Can anyone follow up Heath Ledger’s instantly iconic take on the Joker?
The actor’s 2008 role in The Dark Knight will go down as cinematic legend, however, critics are seriously excited about the character’s latest rendition.
Played by Joaquin Phoenix, the teaser released on Friday shows the Academy Award winner looking very natural wearing the infamously creepy clown makeup.

Directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Starsky & Hutch), the film is said to be a gritty portrayal of the iconic character, exploring his personal life and development into the mysterious and dark protagonist.

Other stars of the upcoming movie, executive produced by Martin Scorsese, include Robert de Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy and Marc Maron.
The movie is scheduled for release Oct. 4, 2019.
