Dan Mangan leaves the Kelowna crowd with full hearts

It might be his soothing voice, it might be his songwriting abilities, or maybe it’s something else, but Dan Mangan just has a knack for making you feel all sorts of emotions.

The Vancouver-based musician was back in Kelowna on Wednesday night in front of a pretty much sold out Kelowna Community Theatre.

It was his first concert in the Okanagan since 2015 and he certainly didn’t disappoint.

After starting with a trio of songs from his new album, More or Less, Mangan jumped right into his hit song "Road Regrets," which made an already captivated crowd come to life even more.

The response had him holding back laughter as he transitioned into "Pine For Cedars," also from his album Nice, Nice, Very Nice, setting the tone for a laidback and memorable evening.

The 35-year-old then got back into his new music and he wasn’t lying when he told NowMedia that the crowds on this tour seemed to be just as excited for his new tunes as they were for the old ones.

It doesn't hurt that his new songs have an ‘instant classic’ vibe to them, fitting in like they’ve been part of his repertoire for years.

As he continued through his set, the crowd continued to woo over the talented British Columbian musician, with one fan even yelling out “stay at my house!”

Once again, Mangan was fighting back laughter on stage as he told the man that a few years ago he would have taken him up on that offer in a heartbeat.

Now halfway through his set, bandmates Don Kerr (drums), Jason Haberman (bass) and Michael Brian (keys/guitar) left the stage and it was time for a few solo songs from the man everyone came to see.

After turning to the crowd for requests, Mangan began a Kelowna-adjusted version of "Tina’s Glorious Comeback."

He changed the Vancouver lyric to Kelowna and said the Blue Gator instead of The Railway, paying tribute to the Kelowna watering hole where he played his first ever show outside of the Lower Mainland.

Mangan followed that up with a hauntingly beautiful version of "Leaves, Trees, Forest" before bringing out his friend Carleigh Aikens to perform the always popular "The Indie Queens Are Waiting."

The band then returned for an up tempo finish, with the crowd joining in to help the four men on stage with their finale, "Sold."

With arguably his biggest song still unplayed, it was no surprise to see the band quickly come out for an encore that started with the hit song "Robots."

The crowd sang along as Mangan smiled on stage, taking it all in, before a lengthy outro where everyone in the Kelowna Community Theatre was belting out that robots needed love too.

No one wanted the night to end, but it had to at some point, so Mangan moved to the middle of the theatre for the show's true finale and the openers, La Force, joined the rest of the band on stage.

Once again, the entire crowd sang along to one of Mangan’s oldest songs, "So Much For Everyone," and it was the perfect cap on a special Wednesday night.

He’s always put on a good show, but this latest offering from the 15-year veteran of the music industry just seemed to offer something more.

The band was a great fit, contributing wonderful harmonies to back up Mangan’s voice, and the lead man himself seemed to be in the perfect mindset from start to finish.

Before Wednesday, it had been four years since Mangan blessed Kelowna with his presence, and we can only hope the window between shows is much smaller this time.
