5 sick from E. coli outbreak in B.C. cheese, public warning issued

An outbreak of E. coli in a B.C. cheese has prompted a public warning from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

Five people have gotten sick from Little Qualicum Cheeseworks’ Qualicum Spice cheese between August and October.

Samples of the cheese were tested and found to be contaminated with E. coli.

As a result, anyone with this product at home, with a best before date up to and including April 24, 2019, is urged to throw it away or return it to the where it was purchased.

An investigation into the outbreak is ongoing to determine the source and extent of the contamination.


E. coli can bring on a wide range of symptoms within one to 10 days after infection, which can cause people to become seriously ill and hospitalized.

The symptoms include:

  • Severe stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Little or no fever

If you’ve eaten this product but have no symptoms, there’s no need to do anythin
